Dance Tips

About Dance Clothes and Their Care:

· To prolong the wear of your garments, hand wash them and drip dry

· Add a bit of baby powder to your shoes for deodorizing

· Carry your shoes in a mesh bag; it will allow plenty of air flow and make them last longer

About Pointe Work

· Take your time when finding the right pointe shoe for you. This is the key to great pointe work. If you are a beginner, always have your teacher check them when you get new shoes. Here is some information about different pointe shoes:

- CAPEZIO- Most of these shoes are made with a strong shank for beginners, and are very popular in the U.S. A few of these include Pavlowa, Contempora, Nicolini, and Odette.
- BLOCH- these are only recommended for the advanced pointe student. They have a rather hard shank for strong arches, and a short vamp for short toes. These shoes will last a long while. The new shoes, Rehearsals and Performance, by Bloch, are specifically made so that the dancer has a shoe to practice in and when they have a performance they will get a shoe almost identical, but breaks in rather quickly.
- CHACOTTE- These Japanese pointe shoes are beautiful, but are not as long lasting. The have a bit of a tapered shank, but very popular and look lovely on the dancer. A few include Veronese and Coppelia.
- Students are recommended to use lambs wool as padding for the inside of their shoes because it hardly takes up any space. Toe Floe pads are not very good because they are large, but some students find these work best. Ouch Pouch pads by Bunheads are nice. They cover a good area of the foot and the material they are made out of gives sufficient padding while not taking up too much space.
- To prolong the life of their shoes, some dancers put Floor Wax or some other kind of wax, although this will make them a little noisier!
